Features and components are stories of the week, with hyperlink to hard words; phonics and thinking games; pictures to print and color; songs to listen to; and information for parents and teachers. Lends itself very well for guided reading Grades K-2 DPS Standard 1 -- Students read and understand a variety of materials. Goodnight Stories http://www.goodnightstories.com Lots of different kinds of stories to read, see, hear, decide, fill in, finish or send. The see-a-story section is particularly good for ESL (English as a Second Language)or beginning readers. Try the wildlife fact files for some higher level thinking. Game section is not educational but fun. Grades 1-3 DPS Standard 1 --Students read and understand a variety of materials. DPS Standard 3 --Students write and speak using formal grammar, usage, sentence structure, punctuation, capitalization, and spelling. Starfall http://www.starfall.com A learn to read website with four developmental reading activity levels. The first level, ABC's, presents keywords for all letters, along with voiced sight words presented in context. The second level, Learn to Read, offers fifteen stories that consist of a phonics movie, the story and a skills game. Levels three and four have higher reading with poetry, music, riddles, comics, folk tales, and Greek myths. In addition there are a dozen or so Holiday Activities that are short but capvitating, especially for non-readers. This site really provides a lot of scaffolding for beginning and emerging readers due to everything being voiced. grades K-2 DPS Standard 1 --Students read and understand a variety of materials. DPS Standard 7--Students use appropriate technologies to extend comprehension and communication skills in reading, writing, speaking, listening and viewing. Scholastic News Zone http://www.teacher.scholastic.com/scholasticnews/ Probably THE best website for students 3rd-5th grade; and they love going to this site. Class almost always begins with Write the Caption, where students write a funny or clever caption to a silly picture from the news. The lead story appears as the Daily News that has good short news stories covering current topical events with links to other resources. Vote Now asks students to consider a relevant topic to kids, has them vote Yes or No on the issue, and then write a short reason for their vote. Pie charts instantly reflect the voting and breaks the data out by state, grade and gender. Hangman is one of the favorite games, and students are working on spelling without even knowing it.
