TIME Collaborative

Centennial is participating in the TIME Collaborative program, initiated by The National Center on Time & Learning (NCTL), which is dedicated to expanding learning time to improve student achievement and enable a well-rounded education.

Starting in 2013 and throughout 2014, a team from Centennial will be working to develop extended learning opportunities in our school. This could include a longer school day with more enrichment time, or perhaps a longer school year. Expanded learning time can transform the educational experience for students as well as the professional experience for teachers. Time creates more opportunities for high quality instruction, targeted intervention and acceleration, engaging enrichments, and teacher collaboration.

The TIME Collaborative program works hand in hand with Expeditionary Learning to develop best learning practices for our CREW.

The timeline for this process goes throughout April 2014 and parent input is encourage. Please consider attending the Time Collaborative meeting Tuesday, February 4th at 5pm in the Centennial Library.

Let’s Celebrate Interim Test Results

Dear Parents,

Before your student went on vacation they may have talked with you about the Interim tests they took in math, reading and writing. Interim assessments are required of all DPS students starting in kindergarten and take place three times a year. These assessments help us know how well students are learning as measured against the standards. On January 6, staff took a close look at their students’ Interim Assessment results and we are very pleased with how our students performed. In almost every single grade level there were increased in % proficient on the interim assessments. In some instances, grade levels saw a 20% increase in their proficiency rates. This is evidence of how hard our teachers are working and how well our students are learning. There is so much positive learning momentum across the building! Specific interim assessment results were shared at the Collaborative School Committee meeting on January 13th and notes with more detail are posted on the school website under the CSC tab.

School Tours, Open Houses, and Coffee Chats

A lot has happened at Centennial over the past year, including the implementation of Expeditionary Learning and a new ECE-3 program at the start of this current school year. There is so much positive energy in and around our school- it’s contagious!

Centennial is the first DPS neighborhood school to use the Expeditionary Learning model, which combines traditional instruction in core academic subjects with real-world projects and community service. “Students of the WoRLD”

Dear Parents,

What a great start to the school year we are having. It feels like we worked so hard preparing for this school year to start, it’s still hard sometimes to believe it really started. And now it’s already October!

There’s been so much positive energy in and around our school- it’s contagious. It’s great to see our returning students and families act as ambassadors for all the new students and families who have joined our school community. Our Centennial family continues to grow and we’re especially thrilled to welcome our new ECE-3 year old program to our building.

While visiting classrooms this fall, we’ve watched our teachers talking with students about our school’s Habits of Scholarship and how they can become “Students of the WoRLD.” Students of the WoRLD are ones who have Wonder, show Respect, act Responsibly, and demonstrate Leadership and Determination. Take a few minutes at home to talk about how your students can demonstrate the Habits of Scholarship with your family at home.

Collaborative School Committee

Every school within DPS must have a collaborative school committee (CSC) in place. The CSC brings together staff, parents, students and community members to create and implement a plan to promote high achievement within the school.
Being part of the CSC is an exciting way to be involved in our school community, not to mention, to participate in the education of all our students. Our school is working towards great goals this year and we believe that by working together, we can achieve them!
This year we have 3 parent representative openings on our CSC. Centennial’s CSC meets the last Monday of every month from 5:30-7pm.
If you are interested in your name being placed on the ballot for one of the openings, please fill out the nomination form sent home in Thursday Folders and return it to the main office no later than the end of school on Wednesday, October 9th, 2013.
If you would like more information concerning the CSC before making a decision, please feel free to contact Laura Munro, principal, or Sharon Jones, Principal Resident at 720-424-8900.
We encourage you to participate in this great work.

Thank You,
Laura Munro

Welcome to the 2013-14 school year.

We have made it through a great first week of school. The halls and classrooms are bustling with students eager to learn and grow. I am pleased to report they are already demonstrating many of the habits of scholarship we have adopted at Centennial. As a school for expeditionary learning those habits include respect, responsibility, leadership and wonder.

I am thrilled as we begin this new year of transformation. The teachers, staff and school leaders have been preparing for and planning a school that will help our students grow and take responsibility for their own learning. When you come to Centennial you can expect to see highly motivated and engaged students, who feel safe, respected and are pushed to achieve at high academic and behavioral standards. I look forward to working with you and your children as we begin this transformation.

This year I am participating in the DPS Learn to Lead Principal Residency program. This residency gives me an opportunity to grow as an instructional and professional leader. In addition to leadership development, I will work to support teachers in developing the high academic standards our students deserve.

It has been my pleasure to get to know our students and families over the past two years and I am committed to continuing those relationships as we move through the school year. It is my hope that this will be a year of wonder, transformation and joy for our students and families. I hope you will visit the school often and I look forward to seeing you.
