New Times for the New School Year

Centennial has been approved to move forward with our innovative Extended Learning Time Plan. Centennial will add 5 days to the student calender for the 2014-15 school year. The school year will officially start Thursday August 21 for all Centennial students ECE-5. Thursday August 21 and Friday August 22 will be days devoted to Crew and community building and creative experiences for students to kick-off their learning expeditions. The other 3 days added to the calender were all non-student contact days that we will re-purpose as school days. These additional days are:

November 10

February 17

April 13

For the 2014-15 school year, Centennial’s school day will be 8:00am- 3:45pm for all grade levels ECE-5. This additional time will provide longer blocks of uninterrupted learning. More high-quality time every day allows us to implement the Expeditionary Learning model to its fullest potential. The extended school day will also allow all students to engage in enrichment classes after lunch every Wednesday. Students will attend five, 8-weeks enrichment classes in the areas over the course of the school year. A preview of classes include:

Abrakadoodle Art

Gravity Dance

Kinder Kixx Soccer

Butterfly Pavilion

Challenge Island

Cleo Parker Dance

Radiant Beginning Yoga

Da Vinci Club

Mind Spark

Denver Center for the Performing Arts

Sticky Fingers Cooking

Denver Zoo

Tech Know

Expedition Night

Our students have been working so hard and learning so much in their Expeditions and we are extremely to host our 1st annual Expedition Night to share all this great work with you. Expedition Night will run ‘open-house’ style so come when you can and tour the school, view art work, visit your child’s classroom to celebrate their accomplishments and chat with other parents. We can’t wait to see you here. ECE will start their Expedition Night at 5:00 and grades K-5 will begin their Expedition Night at 6:00.

Community Carnival

Centennial will be hosting our Community Carnival on May 8th, 3-6pm. There will be carnival games, face painting, baked goods sale, food, bounce house for smaller kids and an inflatable obstacle course for bigger kids.

We are selling wristbands for kids to play games and enter the inflatables. You do not need a wristband to attend the event or go to the silent auction. Wristbands are on sale at our front office.

CREW update

Have you been wondering what your students are learning and talking about during Crew on Monday, Wednesday and Friday? February brings a new structure and focus to weekly Crew time. Each of our three Crew days will have a unique focus and will support students in developing our WoRLD habits of Wonder, Respect, Responsibility, Leadership and Determination.

Each Monday classrooms across the school will partner-up and form Crew Buddies. Crew Buddies will work together on literacy activities such as partner reading. Crew Buddies will give our older students an opportunity to demonstrate leadership as they work with their younger peers.

Wednesdays are ‘grade level choice’ and each team will chose between Goal Setting, Adventure/Fitness or Service Learning. Ask your student what their Wednesday Crew time is focusing on to learn more.

Friday Crew meetings will focus on affirmations and Community Crew Circles. Fridays will be a time for grade level teams and/or individual classrooms to celebrate students’ accomplishments and to publicly recognize students for students of the WoRLD. We highly encourage you to stop by Monday, Wednesday or Friday between 10:45-11:15 to participate in Crew with your child.

TIME Collaborative

Centennial is participating in the TIME Collaborative program, initiated by The National Center on Time & Learning (NCTL), which is dedicated to expanding learning time to improve student achievement and enable a well-rounded education.

Starting in 2013 and throughout 2014, a team from Centennial will be working to develop extended learning opportunities in our school. This could include a longer school day with more enrichment time, or perhaps a longer school year. Expanded learning time can transform the educational experience for students as well as the professional experience for teachers. Time creates more opportunities for high quality instruction, targeted intervention and acceleration, engaging enrichments, and teacher collaboration.

The TIME Collaborative program works hand in hand with Expeditionary Learning to develop best learning practices for our CREW.

The timeline for this process goes throughout April 2014 and parent input is encourage. Please consider attending the Time Collaborative meeting Tuesday, February 4th at 5pm in the Centennial Library.

Let’s Celebrate Interim Test Results

Dear Parents,

Before your student went on vacation they may have talked with you about the Interim tests they took in math, reading and writing. Interim assessments are required of all DPS students starting in kindergarten and take place three times a year. These assessments help us know how well students are learning as measured against the standards. On January 6, staff took a close look at their students’ Interim Assessment results and we are very pleased with how our students performed. In almost every single grade level there were increased in % proficient on the interim assessments. In some instances, grade levels saw a 20% increase in their proficiency rates. This is evidence of how hard our teachers are working and how well our students are learning. There is so much positive learning momentum across the building! Specific interim assessment results were shared at the Collaborative School Committee meeting on January 13th and notes with more detail are posted on the school website under the CSC tab.

School Tours, Open Houses, and Coffee Chats

A lot has happened at Centennial over the past year, including the implementation of Expeditionary Learning and a new ECE-3 program at the start of this current school year. There is so much positive energy in and around our school- it’s contagious!

Centennial is the first DPS neighborhood school to use the Expeditionary Learning model, which combines traditional instruction in core academic subjects with real-world projects and community service. “Students of the WoRLD”

Dear Parents,

What a great start to the school year we are having. It feels like we worked so hard preparing for this school year to start, it’s still hard sometimes to believe it really started. And now it’s already October!

There’s been so much positive energy in and around our school- it’s contagious. It’s great to see our returning students and families act as ambassadors for all the new students and families who have joined our school community. Our Centennial family continues to grow and we’re especially thrilled to welcome our new ECE-3 year old program to our building.

While visiting classrooms this fall, we’ve watched our teachers talking with students about our school’s Habits of Scholarship and how they can become “Students of the WoRLD.” Students of the WoRLD are ones who have Wonder, show Respect, act Responsibly, and demonstrate Leadership and Determination. Take a few minutes at home to talk about how your students can demonstrate the Habits of Scholarship with your family at home.
