End of semester parties and events

Dear Families,

As we approach the winter months, cultures all over the world will be celebrating many different holidays in various ways. This letter is coming to you with the hopes that you, as families, can take advantage of the educational opportunities afforded.

We ask that, as your crew celebrates the end of the semester, you prioritize encouraging the children to embrace the traditions of their own and others in our global and diverse society, keeping the celebration as neutral as possible. Many songs, celebrations, and decorations have no association with a particular holiday (think “snow”, for example). As a school that is diversifying more every year, we would like to celebrate the richness of the cultures represented and use the school as an opportunity to teach our children about this richness. Please don’t hesitate to contact us (info below) if you would like ideas for crafts, celebrations, songs, or general ideas.

In addition, if you are planning a gift for the teachers at this time of year, please consider calling it an end of semester gift, or simply a thank you gift, to avoid contributing it to any specific holiday.

Thank you for your understanding,
Perri Klein, Chair of the Diversity and Inclusivity Committee of the PTA
Julie Eichler, PTA President
Laura Munro, Principal, Centennial Elementary
