Update from Community Meeting

Patti Paredes, our Instructional Superintendent met with the Strategic School Decision (SSD) team and recommended not only grade reconfiguration, but also that we have flexibility in the planning and developing of a new program for Centennial. This could include, but is not limited to, curriculum, specific program design and selection of staff. Patti will hear back from SSD, and will share their decision with staff the week of December 10th. The decision SSD makes will go forward to the Board of Education for a vote on December 20th.

We also learned today of another change that will significantly affect Centennial. Due to our increasing ELLs numbers we will be moving from an ESL program school to a Transitional Native Language Instruction (TNLI) school for the 2013-14 school year. This means we will have ELA-Spanish and ELA-English classes to provide Spanish instruction for all grades. The TNLI programming will be phased in and we will learn more details about this process in the coming weeks.

Please don’t hesitate to email/call our principal, Laura Munro with any questions.

Important meetings concerning Centennial’s future

Parents and community members are encourage to be involved as Centennial goes through the process of making changes throughout the school. The recommendation regarding moving toward a K-5 school will go to the Board of Education for a vote December 20th, 2012. Since Centennial is Accredited on Probation the Strategic School Design team will be looking at Centennial’s data and making a recommendation as well. We should have this recommendation well before the December 20th Board of Education vote.

Personal Safety For Our Kids

With the recent abduction of Jessica Ridgeway on our minds, we encourage you to take 30 minutes to watch this video, 3 Steps Back, with your children. 3 Steps Back is a play about personal safety for kids and adults, written by playwright/composer Mitch Samu. DPS Risk Management, with permission from Mr. Samu, produced this video to provide DPS students and parents with tools they can use to stay safe in a variety of situations. Students from Archuleta Elementary School are featured in the video.
