Expedition Night

Our students have been working so hard and learning so much in their Expeditions and we are extremely to host our 1st annual Expedition Night to share all this great work with you. Expedition Night will run ‘open-house’ style so come when you can and tour the school, view art work, visit your child’s classroom to celebrate their accomplishments and chat with other parents. We can’t wait to see you here. ECE will start their Expedition Night at 5:00 and grades K-5 will begin their Expedition Night at 6:00.

CREW update

Have you been wondering what your students are learning and talking about during Crew on Monday, Wednesday and Friday? February brings a new structure and focus to weekly Crew time. Each of our three Crew days will have a unique focus and will support students in developing our WoRLD habits of Wonder, Respect, Responsibility, Leadership and Determination.

Each Monday classrooms across the school will partner-up and form Crew Buddies. Crew Buddies will work together on literacy activities such as partner reading. Crew Buddies will give our older students an opportunity to demonstrate leadership as they work with their younger peers.

Wednesdays are ‘grade level choice’ and each team will chose between Goal Setting, Adventure/Fitness or Service Learning. Ask your student what their Wednesday Crew time is focusing on to learn more.

Friday Crew meetings will focus on affirmations and Community Crew Circles. Fridays will be a time for grade level teams and/or individual classrooms to celebrate students’ accomplishments and to publicly recognize students for students of the WoRLD. We highly encourage you to stop by Monday, Wednesday or Friday between 10:45-11:15 to participate in Crew with your child.

Let’s Celebrate Interim Test Results

Dear Parents,

Before your student went on vacation they may have talked with you about the Interim tests they took in math, reading and writing. Interim assessments are required of all DPS students starting in kindergarten and take place three times a year. These assessments help us know how well students are learning as measured against the standards. On January 6, staff took a close look at their students’ Interim Assessment results and we are very pleased with how our students performed. In almost every single grade level there were increased in % proficient on the interim assessments. In some instances, grade levels saw a 20% increase in their proficiency rates. This is evidence of how hard our teachers are working and how well our students are learning. There is so much positive learning momentum across the building! Specific interim assessment results were shared at the Collaborative School Committee meeting on January 13th and notes with more detail are posted on the school website under the CSC tab.

“Students of the WoRLD”

Dear Parents,

What a great start to the school year we are having. It feels like we worked so hard preparing for this school year to start, it’s still hard sometimes to believe it really started. And now it’s already October!

There’s been so much positive energy in and around our school- it’s contagious. It’s great to see our returning students and families act as ambassadors for all the new students and families who have joined our school community. Our Centennial family continues to grow and we’re especially thrilled to welcome our new ECE-3 year old program to our building.

While visiting classrooms this fall, we’ve watched our teachers talking with students about our school’s Habits of Scholarship and how they can become “Students of the WoRLD.” Students of the WoRLD are ones who have Wonder, show Respect, act Responsibly, and demonstrate Leadership and Determination. Take a few minutes at home to talk about how your students can demonstrate the Habits of Scholarship with your family at home.

Innovation Plan

Hi Fabulous Centennial Parents,

Hope you are all doing well and enjoying the summer.

As you know, we go in front of the Board of Ed to present our Innovation Plan Monday the 17th. Any and all physical support from parents would be awesome. This meeting is not one for public comment, as I think that happens Thursday.

Also, wanted to let you know that the teacher vote on the plan has closed and we reached the super majority needed! One positive step toward the end!!

Thanks for all you do to support Centennial. We’re SO close!!

Coffee with the Principal

Come have coffee with the principal every Wednesday morning from 8-9. Grab a cup of joe, a donut and talk with school leadership about what’s on your mind. Hope to see you in the school lobby.

Redesign Update

Following last week’s Board of Education meeting, there have been many questions about where we are in the redesign process. I want to assure you that the plan is continuing as approved. The Board of Education has not taken any action to reverse its previous approval of our redesign, and we have the full support of DPS leadership. I remain as confident and committed as ever to bringing into reality the vision that our CSC and school leadership developed over the past several months for the new Centennial School.

2012-13 Winter Weather Information

The decision to keep schools open or to close them during winter weather conditions is not a simple one, but it is made with one overriding factor in mind: the well-being of our students, their families and staff. It is a good idea to decide in advance how to best keep up with the changes, what childcare arrangements are needed, and how to adjust if schools are closed due to inclement weather. Detailed DPS winter weather and snow day information, including information on how families can find out if school is closed, can be found at: http://communications.dpsk12.org/announcements/winter-weather-and-snow-day-information
